In this course we will talk about how being transracially adopted impacts racial identity formation and what parents can do to help. The instructor will be Dr. Gina Miranda Samuels, a professor at the University of Chicago and Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture. She is a transracial adoptee and co-author of the book “Multiracial Cultural Attunement.”
This course covers the following topics:
- Give the age that children start recognizing race and the age that they start developing racial bias.
- List two ways that transracial adoption, fostering, or kinship care can impact the child.
- Explain why a colorblind parenting approach is not best in transracial adoption and fostering.
- Provide two tips for transracial adoptive parents.
