Outline for Understanding the Hague Treaty on Intercountry Adoption and Implementing Laws

Understand the requirements of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption, the Intercountry Adoption Act of 2000 (IAA), the Universal Accreditation Act of 2012, the regulations implementing the IAA or UAA, and other applicable Federal regulations; and the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) regulations applicable to the immigration of children described in INA 101(b)(1)(F) and 101(b)(1)(G). We talk with Irene Steffas, an attorney specializing in adoption and immigration law.

Participants will be able to:

  • List the key elements of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption.
  • Explain the importance of using Accredited or Approved Adoption Agencies.
  • Detail the difference between the I-600 Orphan Route and the I-800 Convention Route for immigrating internationally adopted children.
