In this course we interview Dr. Dan Siegel on the importance of parental attachment style in adoption. There has been a great deal of focus in recent years on the importance of creating healthy attachment in adopted children. Research has shown that healthy secure attachment to a caregiver is crucial for psychological development in children. Attachment, however, is a two-way street, and little focus has been given to the importance of parents attaching to the child. This course addresses the basics of attachment, the impact of parental attachment style on the attachment relationship with adopted children, how social workers can assess parental attachment style, and provides tips for improving parent/child attachment.
This course covers the following topics:
- Name the three components of creating secure attachment.
- Identify how parental attachment styles will impact the adopted child’s attachment.
- Identify ways social workers can assess parental attachment styles.
- Recognize how attachment affects a child’s biological development.
- Name four styles of attachment.
- Discuss how a parent’s attachment and life history affects their parenting style.
