Outline for Ethical Considerations and Child Buying in Intercountry Adoption

What should international adoption agency staff know about child buying and trafficking that can be found in international adoption? What are the red-flags and how to avoid them? What ethical issues should agency staff consider? in this course, we talk with Irene Steffas, an attorney specializing in both adoption and immigration law.

This course covers the following objectives: 

  • Explain how children become available for adoption under the Hague Treaty.
  • Understand the distinction between abandonment, desertion, and disappearance.
  • List issues related to finding the child's identity that might lead to child trafficking.
  • List ways to confirm the child's identity and date of birth.
  • Explain how gifts to birth parents can infer child buying.
